Why take part in research?
Research helps us find better ways to prevent, diagnose and treat illness.
By taking part, you can help improve understanding of different health conditions and support better care for patients in the future. Some studies may also offer access to new treatments, closer monitoring, health checks, or extra support, depending on the study.
Taking part may involve questionnaires, appointments, tests, using an app, or trying a new treatment. Each study is different, and the research team will explain what is involved before you decide.
Taking part is always voluntary, and choosing not to participate will not affect your usual care.

DaRe2THINK Trial

This trial is looking to see whether the use of blood thinning tablets reduce the chances of stroke or dementia in later life
The Trial is for patients with Atrial Fibrillation who are under 75 years old
You may be required to take blood thinning tablets that are already widely used and would be part of your future care anyway
Follow up will be automatic with no extra visits for patients, all you need to do is complete some questionnaires every 6 months using your phone, tablet or computer at home.

Asymptomatic Trial

The aim of the ASYMPTOMATIC trial is to find out the best way for children and young people with asthma to use their inhaled corticosteroids (preventer inhaler).
At the moment, children and young people in the UK are advised to take their corticosteroid inhaler every day. Although this approach appears to help prevent asthma attacks, it may not be needed in all children with mild asthma.
They could perhaps instead use a corticosteroid inhaler only on days when they have asthma symptoms, such as cough, wheeze, or shortness of breath.
This study will measure if the number of asthma attacks is different between children who take their corticosteroid inhaler everyday (the “daily” group) and those who take it only when they have symptoms (the “symptom-driven group”).

Optimise 2

Many older adults take multiple medications to manage high blood pressure, which can sometimes increase the risk of side-effects such as dizziness and falls. Earlier research suggests that carefully reducing the number of blood pressure tablets can be safe in the short term, but we don’t yet know the longer-term effects.
This study will look at whether reducing blood pressure medications in people aged 75 and over, who currently have normal blood pressure, is safe and beneficial. We aim to understand whether deprescribing affects hospital admissions or death, improves quality of life, and could save money for the NHS.

PARC

Children and young people who need to use a blue reliever inhaler more than 2-3 times per week are more likely to have severe asthma/wheeze attacks. It has been recommended that children and young people prescribed high numbers of blue reliever inhalers in the past 12 months should have a check up.
We are aiming to find out whether an enhanced nurse-led check up will reduce the number of asthma/wheeze attacks experienced by young people using too many blue reliever inhalers
Children prescribed 6 or more blue reliever inhalers in a year have been invited to the study.

AFLOAT

AFLOAT is a national research study for older adults with uncomplicated chest infections. It compares recovery between those who take antibiotics and those who take a dummy capsule, helping us understand when antibiotics are truly needed.
If you may be eligible, we will discuss the study with you when you contact us about your symptoms, and you will continue to receive your usual NHS care throughout.

Trecony

The TRECONY study is evaluating an investigational asthma inhaler that uses a new climate friendly alternative propellant designed to have a lower global warming potential.
We’re looking for adults with mild to moderate asthma who currently use a daily inhaled steroid at low or medium dose for asthma treatment (such as beclometasone, budesonide, ciclesonide, fluticasone, or mometasone) associated or not with a bronchodilator
The study lasts about 20 weeks and requires 8 visits to the site. Study drugs, study visits, and study-related tests and examinations are provided at no cost.
Research data and surveillance
Abbeywell Surgery contributes to the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) and the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) Research and Surveillance Centre (RSC).
These programmes use de-identified patient data from GP practices to support public health surveillance and medical research, helping to improve our understanding of disease, monitor infection trends, and inform future healthcare.
Individual patients cannot be identified from this information.
